Bard string audition requirements
Bard College Conservatory of Music requires violin, viola, cello, double bass applicants to prepare a focused audition program. Yes. A prescreening recording (audio or video) must be submitted with the Conservatory application. The fastest way to get your take to standard is to fix the passage that is holding it back, on the same five dimensions a panel listens for, before you ever hit submit.
Requirements and deadlines change every admissions cycle, and exact repertoire varies by instrument and degree. Always confirm the current, official requirements before you prepare: Bard official audition page
Frequently asked
Does Bard require a prescreening video for string auditions?
Yes. A prescreening recording (audio or video) must be submitted with the Conservatory application.
When is the Bard string audition deadline?
Prescreening recording and Conservatory application due January 1 (Spring 2026 audition cycle); prescreening notifications emailed in mid-January. Deadlines change each admissions cycle, so confirm the current dates on the official site.
What repertoire does Bard require for strings?
Prescreen: a movement from unaccompanied Bach, a movement of a concerto, and a work of the applicant's choice. Final auditions expand this, generally adding contrasting Bach movements and sometimes orchestral excerpts. Recorded, live in-person, and live remote auditions are weighed equally. Always confirm the exact, current list for your instrument and degree on the official requirements page.
