String etudes: what each study trains
Etudes are the backbone of technique. Each one isolates a single skill, detache, shifting, double stops, bow control, so it is both the clearest test of that skill and the fastest thing to score. Pick a study below for what it trains, where it sits in the standard sequence, and how to practice it, then record it and find out whether it holds.

Frequently asked
What order should I learn violin etudes in?
The standard sequence runs roughly Wohlfahrt (Op. 45) into Kayser (Op. 20), then Mazas (Op. 36) and Kreutzer (42 Studies), then Fiorillo, Rode (24 Caprices), Dont (Op. 35), and finally the Paganini Caprices. Each book builds on the technique of the last, so the order is a ladder, not a menu.
Why do auditions and teachers use etudes?
An etude isolates one technique with nowhere to hide, so it is the clearest test of a specific skill. Many graded exams and auditions require a study, and teachers use them to drill exactly the technique a student needs next.
How do I get an etude scored?
Record the etude on Orchestra Kingdom and get scored on intonation, evenness, and tone, the same things a teacher listens for. Your first take is free, no signup.
