New York · NYSSMA Solo Festival
NYSSMA Level 1 prep for strings.
The entry grade. A short prepared solo, the simplest required scales, and a gentle sight-reading passage. Beginning string players, often in their first or second year, taking their first adjudicated solo.
What NYSSMA Level 1 asks for
Solo
A short piece in an easy key, usually staying in first position with straightforward rhythms.
Scales
The most basic required scales and arpeggios for the grade, played from memory at a comfortable tempo.
Sight-Reading
A brief passage in a simple key and meter. You study it for a moment, then play it once.
The adjudicator scores each component and returns a total with written comments. Confirm the exact required scales and an approved solo for Level 1 in the current NYSSMA Manual.
Where Level 1 scores are won
- Play the solo cleanly and in tune before you worry about polish. Level 1 rewards accuracy over flair.
- Memorize the required scales so the adjudicator sees command, not hesitation.
- Practice reading one short passage cold each day so sight-reading stops feeling like a surprise.
How Orchestra Kingdom helps at Level 1
- Same five dimensions. The AI Judge scores tone, intonation, rhythm, tempo, and musicality: the same five dimensions a NYSSMA adjudicator marks. Record your solo and get dimension-level feedback in under a minute.
- One take, like the room. NYSSMA scores a single performance. The AI Judge holds the same condition, so your practice matches the day.
- Level-calibrated notes. Feedback for Level 1 is calibrated to the difficulty of the grade, not to a generic beginner or advanced baseline.
