GMEA All-State is Georgia's highest youth orchestra honor, drawn from District auditions each fall. The annual all-state packet specifies etudes and scale requirements by instrument and grade band. District scores decide who advances to the Final audition in January, and the All-State Orchestra event follows later in the season.

GMEA's deadline is September 15. Your school's is earlier.
GMEA's official postmark deadline for registration and payment is Tuesday, September 15, 2026. That is not the date that decides whether you audition. Every school sets its own earlier internal deadline so the director can submit the whole roster at once, and those dates vary widely inside a single district. District V alone spans August 22 to September 9 across its schools.

Assume your school's deadline is two to three weeks before September 15, and ask your director today rather than at the end of the month. Cobb, Gwinnett, and Forsyth had not published their 2026-2027 dates as of this check.
GMEA's own 9th and 10th grade etude links are stale. Check the year letter before you learn a note.
2026-2027 is Year C in GMEA's lettered rotation. The 9th and 10th grade row on the GMEA all-state audition information page still carries four files from earlier rotations, sitting unlabeled alongside the correct ones. A ninth grade cellist or bassist who clicks the wrong one practices the wrong etude for two months.

Open the file before you practice it and confirm it says Year C. The correct 2026-2027 files live in a Drive folder titled ASO Year C 2026-2027, three grade bands crossed with four instruments. If the file name or the header says Year A or Year B, close it and ask your director for the Year C file.
Several Georgia school pages still name the wrong final venue.
For 2026-2027 the final auditions are at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta. Multiple school sites still list Riverwood International Charter School, a previous venue, and at least two of those pages are live right now.
For venue and date, trust the GMEA statewide calendar over a school page. School pages are reliable for one thing only: that school's own internal deadline.

GMEA scale requirements by grade band
Every scale is played from memory.
GMEA states this in all caps at the top of its official scale sheet. There is no music on the stand for the scale portion, at any grade level, on any instrument. Requirements below are from the GMEA all-state scale sheet, revision 9/2022.
Middle school, grades 6 to 8
Separate bows. Majors only at this level, with their arpeggios. No minors.

Same bowing rule as 9 to 10. Read this band carefully: the majors change from the 9 to 10 list, and the minors do not. Players who moved up a bracket lose points assuming both changed.

The slurred tempo agrees. The detache tempo does not, and 60 against 100 is a large practical difference in how the scale has to be prepared. We are not going to pick one for you. Prepare so tempo is not the thing that decides your score, and ask your director which reading your district is using this season.
How the GMEA score sheet adds up

Sight reading is 20 of the 80 points in the district round, and scales are the single largest block you can fully control in advance.
Final round, 200 points

The final audition is 40 percent sight reading. Eighty of the 200 points are music you have never seen before.
Both breakdowns are read straight off the official GMEA score sheets. GMEA does not publish an advancement cutoff. The 55 out of 80 figure that circulates online traces to one school's page, not to GMEA, so do not plan against it.
You cannot register yourself.
A student cannot enter the GMEA all-state audition directly. Your director registers you through Opus, GMEA's registration system, and that director has to be a current GMEA and NAfME member.
There is one exception. A GMEA-member private teacher can register a student when no school program exists in that student's division.
This is exactly why your school's internal deadline matters more than GMEA's. If your director does not enter you, there is no audition to prepare for.

A 2026-2027 practice plan skeleton
- Summer (July to August): confirm the posted GMEA requirements, then build fundamentals. Scales from memory at tempo, slow-practice the hardest passages, and record a weekly baseline take to see where you actually stand.
- Six to eight weeks out: run full excerpts at tempo. Let the Audition Simulator score every take on tone, intonation, rhythm, tempo, and musicality, and pour your daily time into the lowest dimension.
- Final two weeks: stop adding material. Mock the audition under one-take pressure, no retries, so audition day is a rep you have already done.

Is there sight reading in the Georgia all-state audition?
Yes, in both rounds, and it carries real weight. The district round is scored out of 80 and sight reading is 20 of those points. The final round is scored out of 200 and sight reading is 80 of those points, split into a lyrical excerpt worth 40 and a technical excerpt worth 40. The final audition is 40 percent music you have never seen before.
Can a freshman make Georgia All-State?
A freshman is not competing against seniors. GMEA runs three separate brackets: middle school for grades 6 to 8, grades 9 to 10, and grades 11 to 12. A ninth grader auditions in the 9 to 10 bracket, against ninth and tenth graders, on the 9 to 10 scale list and the 9 to 10 etude. GMEA does not publish how many players it takes from any bracket, so nobody can honestly quote you the odds.
What do I wear to the Georgia all-state audition and event?
All black. GMEA's concert dress requirement is strict enough that a violation risks immediate suspension from the event, so get the exact specifics from your director rather than guessing at what counts as all black.
Do I need to bring my own stand?
Yes. Every student brings their own wire stand. Cellists and bassists also bring a rock stop or endpin anchor. Nothing is provided for you, and showing up without a stand is a preventable problem on a day that has enough of them.
Where do I get this season's etude, and how do I know it is current?
From your director, or from the GMEA all-state audition information page. 2026-2027 is Year C, and the correct files sit in a Drive folder titled ASO Year C 2026-2027. How do I find out my score, and where was the cutoff?

How many students does Georgia All-State take?
GMEA does not publish seat counts or acceptance rates for the orchestra. Any percentage quoted for Georgia All-State strings is not traceable to GMEA, so we do not publish one either. Prepare against the score sheet, which is public, rather than against a number nobody can source.
Is the Georgia audition screened or blind?
GMEA does not state this for orchestra in anything we can verify, in either direction. We are not going to tell you which it is. Ask your director how your district runs the room, because it does change how you want to walk in.
How much does the Georgia all-state audition cost?
