The audition that decides your season is in November, not January.
The All-State audition day at Grafton High School on January 23, 2027 is the second audition, and only students who came through their district take it. The first one, the one that gates everything, is your geographic district's Senior District audition in November 2026. Four of the five districts have posted theirs. Eastern has not.

Registration closes before the audition day and your director submits it, so ask now which date applies to you. If you are in Eastern District, ask them to chase the coordinator for a date rather than waiting for the page to update.
The MMEA auditions page mixes two seasons. Its registration dates are a year old.
In one block, massmea.org/auditions gives an All-State registration window of December 1 to 12, 2025, with late registration December 13 to 17, 2025, and then a few lines later gives the audition day as Saturday, January 23, 2027. A registration window cannot close thirteen months before its audition. Those December dates belong to the previous cycle, which ended with the January 24, 2026 audition. The audition day was updated for this season and the registration paragraph was not.

Do not build your season around those December dates, and do not assume this season's window falls on the same days of the month. No correct 2026-2027 registration window is published anywhere we could find. Your director registers you anyway, so ask them, and let them confirm the window with MMEA.
The handbook MMEA links as current is last cycle's edition.
The document linked under governing documents is titled for 2026 and was updated in October 2025. Its standing policy reads as year independent, who registers you, how the room is run, how ties break, and we have used it for exactly that. Its dates are another matter: it still says the concerts are at the Hanover Theater on March 21, 2026. This season's concerts are Mechanics Hall on Friday March 19, 2027 and the DCU Center on Sunday March 21, 2027, a different venue entirely.

Use the handbook for rules and the ensembles page for dates and venues. Where a date inside the handbook disagrees with the ensembles page, the handbook is the stale one.
Eastern District's own linked festival document is a full cycle behind.
Eastern District's current registration page links a document titled 2026 Eastern District Senior Festival, giving January 9 and 10, 2026 at Milton High School. That is last season. Because of it, Eastern District's audition date and location for this season could not be confirmed from any official page, while the other four districts have posted theirs.

If you are in Eastern District, do not assume your audition falls on the same November Saturday as Central or Northeastern. Ask your director to get the date from the Eastern District auditions coordinator, and do not let a stale document set your practice schedule.
One rehearsal date on the MMEA ensembles page is a typo, and we are not repeating it.
The concert schedule lists a Sunday March 21 concert at the DCU Center with a rehearsal on Friday May 19, two months after the concert it belongs to. The concert date itself is confirmed twice across separate MMEA pages. The rehearsal date is almost certainly meant to read March 19, but we are not going to silently correct an official page for you.
Take rehearsal dates from your director rather than from that page, and do not book anything around a May rehearsal.

District audition dates are from each district's own site, and the All-State dates from massmea.org, all read on August 17, 2026. Notice what is missing: the All-State registration window. The only registration dates MMEA currently publishes belong to the previous cycle, so we do not print one. See the warning above.
MMEA scale requirements
One major and one melodic minor, examiner's choice, from memory.
That is the All-State scale rule from MMEA's All-State Festival Handbook. Strings play one major and one melodic minor, chosen by the examiner, from memory, and metronomes are not allowed in the room. Strings are not asked for a chromatic scale, which is a wind, mallet and harp requirement. MMEA keeps the scale sheets themselves in downloadable files, and we did not confirm octave counts, starting pitches or tempos from MMEA's own statewide text, so we do not print them here. Your district may use a narrower scope at its own Senior audition: Eastern and Southeastern both state that minor scales are not required at theirs, while Western tells students to prepare every scale on the sheet because the adjudicator picks two, all memorized.
What MMEA publishes about scoring
MMEA does not publish point totals, category weights, or a maximum score, so there is no table here. What it does publish is the tie-break order for orchestra instrumentalists, which tells you what the form scores: solo evaluation score first, then intonation, then tone, then musicianship, then sight-reading, then scales. Two students on the same total are separated by the solo. There is no fixed statewide qualifying number either. The cutoff spreadsheets that Eastern and Southeastern publish govern acceptance into their own district festival, which is an earlier and different gate.
Your director registers you, and District comes before All-State.
Massachusetts runs two auditions. You audition first into your geographic district's Senior District Festival, on repertoire that district chose for itself. Of the string players accepted there, the top half by audition score receive an All-State recommendation, which earns a second, separate live audition at Grafton High School on January 23, 2027. Making district does not put you in All-State, and neither does the recommendation on its own.
Your school ensemble director registers you at both levels, and must hold a current NAfME membership through the date of the event. One director cannot register another director's students. A private teacher can register you only if your school has no music program at all.
A homeschooled student can be registered by a parent or guardian acting as the principal of the home school program, and that parent also has to hold an active NAfME membership.
Registration runs through Avenir, a third party festival portal, with a separate instance for each district plus one statewide instance for All-State itself.

A 2026-2027 practice plan skeleton
- Summer (July to August): confirm the posted MMEA requirements, then build fundamentals. Scales from memory at tempo, slow-practice the hardest passages, and record a weekly baseline take to see where you actually stand.
- Six to eight weeks out: run full excerpts at tempo. Let the Audition Simulator score every take on tone, intonation, rhythm, tempo, and musicality, and pour your daily time into the lowest dimension.
- Final two weeks: stop adding material. Mock the audition under one-take pressure, no retries, so audition day is a rep you have already done.

Answered from Massachusetts Music Educators Association documents read on August 17, 2026. Where MMEA does not publish something, the answer says so instead of guessing.
How do I get into MMEA All-State orchestra?
Two auditions. First your geographic district's Senior District Festival audition in November 2026. Of the string players accepted there, the top half by score receive an All-State recommendation. Recommended students then travel to one statewide All-State audition at Grafton High School on January 23, 2027 and play again, live, on the statewide list.
Do I prepare a different piece for District than for All-State?
Yes, and this is the most common way a Massachusetts string player wastes a month. Each district picks its own Senior District repertoire. The statewide All-State list for this season is Viotti Concerto No. 23 in G, movements 1 and 2, for violin; Stamitz Concerto in D, Op. 1, movement 3, for viola; Saint-Saens Allegro Appassionato, Op. 43, complete, for cello; and the Marcello Sonata in e minor, complete, for bass. Cadenza passages are not asked for.
Do I have to memorize scales for MMEA auditions?
Yes. At All-State you play one major and one melodic minor, chosen by the examiner, from memory, and metronomes are not allowed. Your district audition may ask for less: Eastern and Southeastern both state that minor scales are not required at their own Senior auditions, while Western expects every scale on the sheet, memorized, with the adjudicator picking two.
Is the Massachusetts audition live or a recording?
Live and in person at both levels. The All-State page states that this season's auditions are live auditions. The pre-screen video path exists only for Contemporary Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble Vocalists, and it does not apply to violin, viola, cello or bass.
Is the All-State audition screened?
Yes. The judges sit behind a tri-fold screen, an assistant introduces you by a four digit audition number, and students are told not to speak to the judges. Recording devices and phones are banned in the audition room and a violation is grounds for disqualification.
Is there sight-reading?
Yes. Strings are given a sight-reading example at All-State, and every district we checked confirms a sight-reading component too, several of them generating it from SightReadingFactory. What is not published anywhere is the order of events inside a single audition, so do not assume the solo, the scales or the sight-reading comes first.
What score do I need to make Massachusetts All-State?
There is no fixed statewide cutoff number. The published mechanism is that the top half of accepted string players at your own Senior District Festival receive the All-State recommendation. The numeric cutoff spreadsheets that Eastern and Southeastern publish are district entry cutoffs, they move every year, and they are not the All-State bar.
When does All-State registration open this season?
MMEA has not published it correctly anywhere we could find. The only registration dates currently on the auditions page are December 1 to 17, 2025, which belong to the previous cycle and sit a few lines above a January 2027 audition date. Ask your director, who submits the registration anyway, rather than planning against those dates.
How much does the Massachusetts audition cost?
The All-State audition is $30 regular and $50 late. District audition fees run $15 to $20 regular depending on the district, with late fees on top. If you are accepted into your district festival there is a further fee, $25 to $30 depending on district. The All-State festival participation fee for this season is not posted yet.
Can homeschooled students audition in Massachusetts?
Yes. A parent or guardian acting as the principal of the home school program can register the student, but that parent has to hold an active NAfME membership, the same requirement placed on a school director. A private teacher can register a student only when the school has no music program at all.
