Illinois all-state audition prep for 2026-2027.
ILMEA All-State is Illinois's premier youth orchestra honor for string players. District auditions each fall use a published etude packet and scale requirements. The panel is blind and scores multiple dimensions. Earning an All-State chair requires consistent execution across every excerpt, not just peak moments.

Verified against ilmea.org on August 17, 2026.ilmea.org
ILMEA's September 16 deadline is a director deadline, not a student one.
Nothing you do on your own puts you in this audition. The nomination is submitted by a director on nominate.ilmea.org and it closes at 5:00pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The recording window opens that same day and closes at 5:00pm on Wednesday, September 30. That is two weeks to record something clean, with no edits permitted to the file.
Ask your director this week whether you are on the nomination list, and ask which excerpt set they are working from. 2026-2027 is the Brahms year in ILMEA's rotation, not the Beethoven set from Fall 2025.
ILMEA's current page links last season's student recording instructions.
On a page labelled 2026-2027, the Student Edition of the recording instructions is last season's 25-26 file, sitting directly beside an Educator Edition that was correctly updated to 26-27. The two look like a matched pair and they are not. The recording rules are strict enough that following the wrong edition can cost you the audition.
- Student Edition recording instructions, 25-26, linked from a 2026-2027 page
- Educator Edition recording instructions, 26-27, correct, linked right beside it
Open the PDF and check the season printed on it before you record anything. If it says 25-26, close it and ask your director for the 26-27 Educator Edition, which is the version that is current.
Two official ILMEA pages disagree on who is eligible for All-State.
One ILMEA page says grades 6 to 12 are eligible for All-State. Another says grades 9 to 12. We are not picking one for you, so here are both. The 6 to 12 reading is corroborated by the Junior High All-State program ILMEA launched in January 2026, and the Parent FAQ carrying the 9 to 12 reading appears to be stale.
- An ILMEA page stating grades 6 to 12 are eligible for All-State
- An ILMEA Parent FAQ stating grades 9 to 12
If you are in grades 6 to 8, do not rule yourself out on the Parent FAQ alone. Ask your director to confirm which reading your district is using this season, and ask before the September 16 nomination closes.
The 2026-2027 ILMEA season, date by date
| Date | What happens | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday, September 9, 2026 | Audition materials released | Scales, this season's excerpts and the recording instructions go up. Everything after this is a three week sprint. |
| Wednesday, September 16, 2026, 5:00pm | Nomination deadline | Your director submits the nomination on nominate.ilmea.org. Students cannot nominate themselves, so a missed nomination ends the season here. |
| Wednesday, September 16, 2026 | Audition video window opens | Recording and upload run from the same day the nominations close. |
| Wednesday, September 30, 2026, 5:00pm | Audition video deadline | Uploads close. Two weeks end to end, with no edits allowed to the file you send. |
| Week of October 12, 2026 | District results | ILMEA publishes a week, not a day. |
| Week of December 7, 2026 | All-State results | Same pattern as districts, a week rather than a date. |
| Wednesday to Saturday, January 27 to 30, 2027 | Illinois Music Education Conference | Peoria. The All-State ensembles perform here. |
Dates are from ILMEA's published 2026-2027 schedule, read on August 17, 2026. The two 5:00pm cutoffs are the ones that end seasons: the nomination on September 16 and the video upload on September 30.
ILMEA scale requirements by grade band
Senior scales, grades 9 to 12: seven majors and two melodic minors, detache at quarter note = 120.
The table below is ILMEA's senior division scale requirement for this season. Junior high scales are a separate list, and they were standardized statewide starting Fall 2026, which is a genuine change: a junior high player cannot reuse a district-specific sheet from last year. We have not read the new junior high list in ILMEA's own current document, so we do not print those keys here. Get that sheet from your director.
Senior division, grades 9 to 12
Detache at quarter note = 120. Minors are melodic.
| Instrument | Major | Minor | Octaves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Violin | C, G, D, A, E, F and B-flat major | c and g melodic minor | 3 octaves |
| Viola | C, G, D, A, E, F and B-flat major | c and g melodic minor | 3 octaves |
| Cello | C, G, D, A, E, F and B-flat major | c and g melodic minor | 3 octaves |
| Bass | C, G, D, A, E, F and B-flat major | c and g melodic minor | 2 octaves |
How the ILMEA score sheet adds up
Recorded audition, 70 points
| Section | Points | What the judge marks |
|---|---|---|
| Tone quality | 15 | The largest block, tied with technical facility, and the first tie-break. |
| Technical facility | 15 | The other largest block, and the second tie-break. |
| Intonation | 10 | Scored on its own line. |
| Rhythmic accuracy | 10 | Scored on its own line. |
| General musicianship | 10 | The third tie-break. |
| Scale studies | 10 | The one block you fully control before you press record. |
Ties break on tone quality first, then technical facility, then general musicianship. Two players on the same total are separated by tone.
This is ILMEA's published 70 point breakdown. ILMEA does not publish an advancement cutoff, so we do not quote one. There is no sight-reading at All-State, which ILMEA states explicitly, so every point above is something you can prepare.
Your director nominates you. You cannot nominate yourself.
ILMEA auditions run on nomination. A director submits it through nominate.ilmea.org by 5:00pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. A student cannot enter directly.
There is one exception: a student whose school offers no ensemble for that instrument. Homeschool co-ops can take part by registering as a Participating School.
The audition itself is a recorded video, uploaded unlisted to YouTube and linked through nominate.ilmea.org. You are alone on camera. No coaching, no pitches, no metronome, no backing tracks, and no edited or enhanced audio. Any deviation disqualifies the audition, so read this season's recording instructions before you record rather than after.

A 2026-2027 practice plan skeleton
- Summer (July to August): confirm the posted ILMEA requirements, then build fundamentals. Scales from memory at tempo, slow-practice the hardest passages, and record a weekly baseline take to see where you actually stand.
- Six to eight weeks out: run full excerpts at tempo. Let the Audition Simulator score every take on tone, intonation, rhythm, tempo, and musicality, and pour your daily time into the lowest dimension.
- Final two weeks: stop adding material. Mock the audition under one-take pressure, no retries, so audition day is a rep you have already done.
How Orchestra Kingdom prepares you for ILMEA
- Same rubric the panel uses. The Audition Simulator scores tone, intonation, rhythm, tempo, and musicality on the same scale ILMEA adjudicators do, calibrated against real audition feedback.
- Specific, not generic. Not "work on intonation" but which interval, which passage, how the drift shows up. A real teacher's specificity, between lessons.
- Audition Prep Mode (Kingdom Pass). Set your audition date and target. The Oracle plan rebalances your daily drill schedule against your timeline. Within 21 days: zero new material, review only.

Illinois ILMEA all-state questions
Answered from Illinois Music Education Association documents read on August 17, 2026. Where ILMEA does not publish something, the answer says so instead of guessing.
Is there sight-reading in the Illinois All-State audition?
No. ILMEA states plainly that there is no sight-reading at All-State. The audition is a recorded video, scored out of 70 points across tone quality, technical facility, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, general musicianship and scale studies. Every one of those is something you can rehearse before you press record.
Which excerpts are used for 2026-2027?
The Brahms set. ILMEA rotates the excerpts: Fall 2025 was Beethoven, Fall 2026 is Brahms, Fall 2027 is Mozart, and Fall 2028 is Berlioz and Mendelssohn. If you inherited a folder from a player who auditioned last season, you are holding the Beethoven set and it is the wrong year.
Can I nominate myself for ILMEA All-State?
No. Your director submits the nomination through nominate.ilmea.org by 5:00pm on September 16, 2026. The one exception is a student whose school offers no ensemble for that instrument, and homeschool co-ops can take part by registering as a Participating School.
What are the Illinois senior scale requirements?
For grades 9 to 12: C, G, D, A, E, F and B-flat major, plus c and g melodic minor. Violin, viola and cello play three octaves. Bass plays two. Detache at quarter note = 120. Scale studies are 10 of the 70 points on the score sheet.
Can I edit my Illinois audition recording?
No. Student alone on camera, no coaching, no pitches, no metronome, no backing tracks, and no edited or enhanced audio. Any deviation disqualifies the audition. The video is uploaded unlisted to YouTube and linked through nominate.ilmea.org, so leave yourself time to redo a full take rather than patching one.
What grades can audition for Illinois All-State?
Two official ILMEA pages disagree. One says grades 6 to 12, one says grades 9 to 12. The 6 to 12 reading is corroborated by the Junior High All-State program ILMEA launched in January 2026, and the Parent FAQ carrying 9 to 12 appears to be stale. If you are in middle school, ask your director to confirm rather than assuming you are out.
How much does the Illinois audition cost?
The school pays a $50 Participating School fee per building. Auditions are $12 each. Festival participation is $35. All-State participation is $45 for senior and $40 for junior. Ask your director which of these your school covers and which lands on your family.
Did the junior high scales change this year?
Yes. Junior high scales were standardized statewide starting Fall 2026, which is a real change for this season. A junior high player practicing from an older district-specific sheet is practicing the wrong requirement. Get the current junior high scale list from your director, and check that it is the statewide one.
